11/4 The Spanish Massenet, Ruperto Chapí Ruperto Chapí is best known for his 150 zarzuelas. But the composer known as "the Spanish Massenet" wrote music in every genre. This week, a selection of Chapí’s music for the theater and the concert hall via selections from his many zarzuelas serve as appetizers for his final string quartet.
11/11 Mexican and Spanish Rarities Join us this week for classical music from mid-20th century Mexico and late 19th-century Spain in a program of hidden treasures from Mexico’s Miguel Bernal and Spain’s Isaac Albéniz. There’s an organ concerto written in 1949 by Mexican composer, organist, pedagogue, and musicologist Miguel Bernal Jiménez, born February 16, 1910 in Morelia. Also on the program: the world premiere recording of Isaac Albéniz's Four Catalan Symphonic Scenes.
11/18 Giants of Mexican Musical Nationalism María Teresa Rodríguez performs Manuel María Ponce's Piano Concerto with Eduardo Mata leading Orquesta Filarmónica de la UNAM. Also on the program: Chávez Third Symphony with Eduardo Mata conducting the London Symphony Orchestra.

11/25 Enfoque: Carlos Suriñach Born in Barcelona, trained in Germany, and a naturalized American citizen, Carlos Suriñach’s works are redolent with his melodic re-imaginings of Spanish folkloric traditions. On this edition of The Spanish Hour, we’ll enjoy the flamenco-inspired Ritmo jondo, the Piano Quartet of 1944, and his Piano Concerto, dedicated to Alicia de Larrocha.
