Originally from Venezuela, host Inés Guanchez now lives now in Costa Rica and is a new host on Your Classical Minnesota. With a master’s degree in Communications and Piano Performance from the University of Minnesota, Inés is also a member of Dúo Ávila, a violin and piano ensemble whose mission is the exploration and performance of works by underrepresented composers, namely women composers and composers of color.

Host Ines Guanchez takes us on a musical exploration of the lives of women composers and performers from Latin America who have and are re-shaping music history to this day.

Teresa Carreño was a Venezuelan composer and pianist who was nicknamed the “The Valkyrie of the Piano,” due to her formidable and impactful playing. But Teresa’s legacy extends beyond the amazing works and recordings she left behind, as her powerful image as a performer and individual challenged the image a vast majority of individuals had at the time regarding women in music. And she is not the only Latin American woman to have done so.

Listen as we explore the music and lives of select women composers and performers from Latin America who have re-shaped music history and continue to do so to this day. The program will feature Latin American performers and composers such as Gabriela Montero, Gabriela Lena Frank, and Clara Rodriguez, to name a few.
