The beauty of this album takes my words away.
When my colleague Brenda Tremblay shared this with me earlier this summer, I first just listened and listened. And then when answering emails that ask, “how have you been?” I wanted to skip the rambling of everyday life and just send a song like this.
But since it is my job to spotlight this CD in some other way besides sighs and incomprensible gestures…
“Il Viaggio d’Amore” is a journey through many places and times, with music that touches on different aspects of love, mixing elements of folk and baroque and other styles. Hirundo Maris (Swallow of the Sea) is the border crossing musical project led by Arianna Savall (soprano, harps, composer) and Petter Udland Johansen.
“Like a migratory bird, they retrace the routes across seas and music that have linked Scandinavia with the Iberian Peninsula since time immemorial,” according to Hirundo Maris's site.
I hope some fair wind sends them to our shores some day. Until then, we can just be enchanted over the airwaves through recordings like this one.
