From the Top celebrates classical musicians of color, Sun 9/15 @ 5pm

The Black Lives Matter movement has inspired many, including a harpist whose organization exists to empower artists of color and advocate for justice, a pianist who shares a story of commissioning of a brand new work, and a cellist who shares his experience as a black musician in classical music.

9/1 We hear bassist Jamie Park performs a Scherzo by Glière; clarinetist Veronica Pavlovic plays Three Romances by Clara Schumann; cellist Carter Medina plays SEVEN for Solo Cello by Andrea Casarrubios; euphonium player Jahiem James plays excerpts from Pantomime by Philip Sparke; and pianist Isabelle Bruening plays an Etude by Rachmaninoff.

9/8 Joseph Conyers, Principal Bassist of the Philadelphia Orchestra is our special co-host as FTT presents composer/pianist Rhyuhn Green’s Symbiosis, violinist Gabriela Salvador Riera performs Jessie Montgomery’s Rhapsody No. 2, flutist Joshua Rascón plays a Romance by Widor, harpist Eunice Park performs an Aria by Marcel Grandjany, and guitarist Ethan Kim plays music by Roland Dyens.

9/15 In the Where Are They Now? episode, we’ll hear from a harpist whose organization exists to empower artists of color and advocate for justice; a pianist who shares a story of commissioning of a brand new work; a cellist who shares his experience as a black musician in classical music; an award-winning string quartet with a new album; a violinist whose choice of repertoire was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and last summer’s protests.

9/22 Today we’ll hear violinist Rubi Lee perform excerpts from Carmen Fantasy by Sarasate; composer Willa Hawthorne presents her Interiors for Oboe and Clarinet performed by Diana Dunn, ob, and Emily Bowland, cl; cellist Ivan Wang presents Polonaise Brilliante by Chopin; violist Valeria Serrano performs music of Vaughan Williams; and pianist Luke Turner performs a Sonata by Beethoven.

9/29 Violinist Laura Wang plays Romance for Violin and Piano by Amy Beach; clarinetist Aydin Iqbal plays Première Rhapsodie by Debussy; double bassist Maereg Million performs Chanson Triste by Koussevitzky; saxophone Sanket Vankayalapati plays an arrangement of Fauré’s Élégie; and cellist Benjamin Smith plays a movement from Suite for Cello Solo by Gaspar Cassadó.
