9/2 Music from 20th-century Spain This week’s program comprises two works from opposite ends of the 20th century: Ardor, the violin concerto written in 1998 by José Luis Greco with Mariana Todorova as soloist, and the complete music to the 1919 ballet El Sombrero de tres picos (Three-Cornered Hat) by Manuel de Falla, featuring Florence Quivar.
9/9 Enfoque: Arriaga, “The Spanish Mozart” Spain's Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga was born 50 years to the day after the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Like Mozart, Arriaga was a prodigy who died quite young. Unlike Mozart, Arriaga was only 19 at the time of his death. Featuring Overture to Los Esclavos felices, the cantata Herminie with Basque soprano Ainhoa Arteta, and Symphony in D.
9/16 The Classical Side of Paquito D’Rivera A child prodigy, the Cuban-born clarinetist and saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera is well-known equally in both the jazz and classical worlds. His phenomenal success as a jazz musician has overshadowed his work in the classical field, which is just as impressive, vibrant, and virtuosic. On this edition of The Spanish Hour, we’ll get a taste of some of Paquito D’Rivera’s evocative classical compositions.
9/23 Spanish and Latin American Rarities This week, we hear well-known Spanish and Mexican composers and their not so famous works. Piianist Miguel Baselga, The State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra, and Barcelona Symphony Orchestra bring us rarities by Albéniz, Ponce, and Granados.
9/30 Enfoque: Frederic Mompou Works for piano, guitar, and voice by the enigmatic 20th-century Catalan composer Frederic (Federico) Mompou, performed by Alicia de Larrocha, Julian Bream, Victoria de los Ángeles, and Judith Jáuregui.
