Carlos Gardel, tango singer on Fiesta, Thu 1/30 @ 10pm

Although the birth of tango singer Carlos Gardel (1890 - 1935) may be Uruguayan, French or Argentinian, there is no doubt that Gardel was the world’s first and, arguably, only Global Tango Star.

1/2 Venezuelan Composer Paul Desenne Paul Desenne’s tricultural vantage point on today’s musical world blends anthropological accuracy, conceptual diversity, and musical abstraction in a vast body of work. His music is passionate, often features elaborate constructions in rhythmic counterpoint, and explores the many avenues of Latin American concert-music.

1/9 Intimate Sounds Fiesta offers a series of glamorous and intimate combinations of instruments that are not often presented together: oboe and guitar, clarinet and guitar, viola and guitar, as well as some ensembles integrating all of the above. Works by Isaac Albéniz, Egberto Gismonti, and Astor Piazzolla will be featured.

1/16 Le donne cambiate - An 18th Century Portuguese Opera Marcos António da Fonseca Portugal known as Marcos Portugal, or Marco Portogallo, was a Portuguese classical composer, who achieved great international fame for his operas. Fiesta presents selections from his opera “Le donne cambiate,” a very successful work which first performance took place at Teatro San Moisè, Venezia in 1797.

1/23 Great Symphonic Music Mexico Fiesta presents four outstanding orchestral works by contemporary and historical composers. We will hear the great Carlos Chávez Symphony No. 1 and José Pablo Moncayo’s miniature masterpiece Sinfonietta paired with recent works by Hebert Vázquez and Mauricio Zyman.

1/30 Latin American Songs Join us for gorgeous melodies, passionate nature, and brilliant composers on a fascinating trip of Latin American song. Included in this program are works by Carlos Guastavino, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and the great tango singer Carlos Garde.
