During Mental Health Awareness Month, From the Top explores the intersection of music and brain science with outstanding young musicians.

5/4 NYPO President Deborah Borda co-hosts and speaks with young musicians including clarinetist Santiago Del Curo who plays music by Béla Kovács; violinist Iris Hur who plays a Sonata by Hindemith; pianist Jordan Manasse plays a Sonata by Prokofiev; violinist Dexter Doris plays a Pastorale by George Enescu; and we’ll hear a new work, Avast, Ye! Maidens Sing by composer Yuri Lee (b. 2004)

5/11 Music and the Brain Part I In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we’ll present a two-part exploration of the intersection of music, brain science, and wellness, recorded in partnership with USC Brain and Creativity Institute & USC Center for Music, Brain and Society. We’ll hear from pianist Jascha Silberstein playing music of Ravel; violinist Sophia Zhang playing music by Fritz Kreisler; saxophonist Kaushik Valiveti performs an Aria by Eugène Bozza; and pianist Evan Ding plays music by Bert Appermont (b. 1973).

5/18 Music and the Brain Part II Today we hear from flutists Angela Wang and Erin Liao playing a Duo for Two Flutes by Friedrich Kuhlau; baritone William Bolin singing Schubert; trombonist Mikael Malmgren plays a selection by Alexandre Guilmant; violinist Rachel Won plays selections from Four Souvenirs For Violin and Piano Paul Schoenfield; and pianist Celine Chen performs a movement of Samuel Barber’s Piano Sonata.

5/25 We meet the award-winning Plexus Saxophone Quartet performing The Jig by Clint Bleil; flutist Erica Wang plays music by Fauré; guitarist Brady Davis plays music of Leo Brouwer; violinist Hong Know plays a Capriccioso by Camille Saint-Saëns; and pianist Celine Chen plays a Fanfare Toccata by Stephen Hough.
