Each year WXXI Classical presents a series of films that are related to classical music in some way. Selected by our classical music hosts Brenda Tremblay, Mona Seghatoleslami, and Steve Johnson each film chosen exemplifies the power of music in a non-traditional narrative. Films are often preceded by subject-related live music in The Little Cafe or followed by live panel discussion following the film.

WXXI Classical Presents... MAESTRA, Thu 3/7 @ 7pm

a woman stands triumphant with her arm raised

Five incredible women from around the world, who are boldly breaking glass ceilings in the male-dominated world of orchestral conducting, take center stage in the exciting new documentary MAESTRA.

These women gathered in Paris for ‘La Maestra’, the only competition in the world for female conductors. Personal stories of survival, passion and perseverance are woven together with the drama and excitement of this one-of-a-kind event.

WXXI Classical Presents "Maestra" at The Little Theatre on Thursday March 7th at 7pm, in partnership with the One Take documentary series, followed by a discussion. Tickets available online here and at the door.

The post-film discussion includes: director Maggie Contreras, Dr. Yunn-Shan Ma (Director of the RIT Philharmonic Orchestra and GVOC), and Dr. Leah McGray (Coordinator of Instrumental Activities, Conductor of Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra at SUNY Geneseo), hosted by WXXI Classical Music Director Mona Seghatoleslami.

There will be an encore screening (movie only) on Saturday March 9th at 3pm.
