Each year WXXI Classical presents a series of films that are related to classical music in some way. Selected by our classical music hosts Brenda Tremblay, Mona Seghatoleslami, and Steve Johnson each film chosen exemplifies the power of music in a non-traditional narrative. Films are often preceded by subject-related live music in The Little Cafe or followed by live panel discussion following the film.

WXXI Classical presents Sweet Charity in a special "Roadshow Version" including an overture, intermission, and exit music, at The Little Theatre Saturday, March 29th, at 3pm, followed by a discussion with Rebecca Burditt (Associate Professor of Media and Society, Hobart and William Smith Colleges) and Natalie Rogers-Cropper (President and CEO, Garth Fagan Dance) hosted by WXXI's Steve Johnson. Quirky, sensual, heartwarming, and altogether groovy, Bob Fosse's 1969 film directorial debut is a feast of sight and sound, and features some of his most iconic numbers such as "Hey Big Spender" and "The Rich Man's Frug."

Shirley MacLaine gives one of her greatest performances in this spectacular musical based on Neil Simon’s smash Broadway hit, inspired by Federico Fellini’s Nights of Cabiria. Director Bob Fosse broke new cinematic ground with this freewheeling, visually stunning story of a lovelorn New York dance hall hostess, Charity Hope Valentine, who dreams of old-fashioned romance but gives her heart to one undeserving man after another.

A native of Herndon, Virginia, Steve came to Rochester to earn his Ph.D. in Musicology at the Eastman School of Music. He has loved classical music and public media since his youth, and has worked for years to make classical music more accessible on social media.
