Each year WXXI Classical presents a series of films that are related to classical music in some way. Selected by our classical music hosts Brenda Tremblay, Mona Seghatoleslami, and Steve Johnson each film chosen exemplifies the power of music in a non-traditional narrative. Films are often preceded by subject-related live music in The Little Cafe or followed by live panel discussion following the film.

WXXI Classical Presents: Howl's Moving Castle

Poster with information about screening times for Howl's Moving Castle at The Little Theatre. Howl and Sophie stand back-to-back in front of the castle.

Join us at WXXI Classical as we celebrate the 75th birthday of beloved composer Joe Hisaishi, frequent collaborator with Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli, with a special screening of Howl's Moving Castle. The iconic score to this film has inspired generations since its premiere 20 years ago. Come to the Little Theatre to see the film and stick around afterward for a panel discussion with Akshaj Turebylu (Producer and Host, “The Magic of Joe Hisaishi and Studio Ghibli,” airing on WXXI Classical 12/5 at 3PM), Dr. Joanne Bernardi (Professor of Japanese and Visual and Cultural Studies, University of Rochester), and Nick Anderson (Ph.D. Candidate in Musicology, Eastman School of Music) hosted by WXXI's Steve Johnson. Tickets will go on sale November 6th online and at The Little Theatre.

Sophie has an uneventful life at her late father’s hat shop, but all that changes when she befriends wizard Howl, who lives in a magical flying castle. However, the evil Witch of Waste takes issue with their budding relationship and casts a spell on young Sophie, which ages her prematurely. Now Howl must use all his magical talents to battle the jealous hag and return Sophie to her former youth and beauty.
