Fred Child, host of Performance Today for 25 years, announces the next chapter in his career

Every weekday and also Saturday mornings 1.2 million listeners across the country welcome Fred Child into their homes, offices or cars to hear the Peabody award-winning classical music radio program. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, he's joined by Bruce Aldolph for the weekly game, Piano Puzzler.

The two-hour program is frequently on the road, recording at festivals and concerts around the country, bringing those live performances to listeners nationwide. Often listeners inquire about how to "get a CD" of the music they've heard. Since these performances are recorded by PT live, generally there are no commercial recordings available.

In fall 2024, Fred announced that he will be stepping away from the host mic in October 2025 to explore his next "un-retirement" chapter.

In November 2024 Fred sat down with Chris Farrell in the MPR News studios to talk about what's next in his career. Fred doesn't have a firm answer yet. But he is "open to possibilities," that may include exploring how he might continue to help keep the classical music ecosphere connected, and continue to "take the stuffiness out of classical music," making it accessible and relevant to all.
