Musicians of Rochester serves as a portrait of musical life in and around the greater Rochester, New York region.

Musicians of Rochester: Dave Porter

My day job is as a Program Manager with Syntec Optics in Rochester, New York.  I have a technical background in design and engineering.

I love all types of music - listening and performing. I serve on the board of the Genesee Symphony Orchestra and have been the principal trombone player in the GSO for more than ten years.  I also play in many other local ensembles: the Genesee Valley Wind Ensemble, Batavia Concert Band, Trombone Choir, Alexander Fireman's Band and Batavia Swing Band.

I think I have the most fun performing in pit orchestras for local high school theater productions. It’s so inspiring to see the high levels of performance the students achieve under the direction of great musicians like Laurence Tallman at Byron Bergen Central, Ray Suriani at Warsaw Central, and too many others to mention. Having music and theater in our local schools and communities is enriching and accessible to everyone. With a modest amount of care and investment, the musical and visual arts provide a lifetime of benefit.

I'm a big fan of all of the great listening and performing musical opportunities we have in Western New York and am a HUGE fan of the Rochester Philharmonic and Eastman School of Music. My favorite radio station to listen to? WXXI of course!

In addition to music, I enjoy travelling with my wife Jill. I enjoy backpacking in the Allegheny mountains, Finger Lakes, the Catskills, and the Adirondacks. I hope to hike the complete Appalachian Trail someday - when I can find the time!
