Claude Bolling: Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio

Rebecca Gilbert, flute
Jeff Campbell, double bass
Chiao-Wen Cheng, piano
Dave Mancini, drums

It was a stroke of genius: jazz pianist Claude Bolling wrote a seven movement Bach-infused suite for jazz piano trio and flute, enlisted the talents of classical flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal to play with his band, and released an album with a sassy and sexy cover. It was an instant best seller, and was nominated for a Grammy award that year.

When putting together their "Bach to the Future" concert for March 2017, Society for Chamber Music in Rochester co-artistic directors Juliana Athayde and Eric Behr saw an obvious opportunity: bring in Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Principal Flute Rebecca Gilbert--a player already well-versed in how to walk on the jazzy side of the street--and match her up with three of Rochester's best jazz players to perform the suite. For Performance Rochester, you'll hear three of the movements and, as you'll also hear, it was an instant hit.  Again.

Listen to the Fugace from Bolling's Jazz Trio.

A Strong Memorial baby and Greece Arcadia grad, Julia Figueras was the Music Director and mid-day host for WXXI Classical until June 30, 2023 when she retired after more than 26 years of service. She also hosted the award-winning monthly interview/performance show, Backstage Pass.
