WXXI Classical's annual celebration of local performing groups. While the novel coronavirus has resulted in the cancellation of concerts and seasons, we brought some of the area's best live musical moments to you. This focus on local music has continued through the show Performance Upstate and the continued inclusion of live, local performances as part WXXI's daily programming.

Missy Mazzoli: Magic with Everyday Objects

Meet fivebyfive: a chamber group that brings together music of our time, multi-media presentations and, every now and then, shopping. And they do more than just mount concerts; they also hold workshops for students from elementary school through high school throughout the area, and have appeared in the Fringe Festival with our very own Mona Seghatoleslami. Their musical selections are eclectic--sometime edgy, sometimes soothing, and always fascinating. And the instrumentation is equally compelling: flute (Laura Lentz), clarinet (Marcy Bacon), bass (Erik Polenik), electric guitar (Sungmin Shin), and piano (Haeyeun Jeun). But first and foremost, collaboration is key word for fivebyfive.

Magic with Everyday Objects by Missy Mazzoli is "a piece on the verge of a nervous breakdown, in which the 'everyday' building blocks of music are turned upside-down." This performance was drawn from a broadcast of Live from Hochstein in April, 2017.

A Strong Memorial baby and Greece Arcadia grad, Julia Figueras was the Music Director and mid-day host for WXXI Classical until June 30, 2023 when she retired after more than 26 years of service. She also hosted the award-winning monthly interview/performance show, Backstage Pass.
