WXXI Classical's annual celebration of local performing groups. While the novel coronavirus has resulted in the cancellation of concerts and seasons, we brought some of the area's best live musical moments to you. This focus on local music has continued through the show Performance Upstate and the continued inclusion of live, local performances as part WXXI's daily programming.

The First Muse series has a huge presence in this year's Performance Rochester, and with good reason: founder and artistic director Melissa Matson decided to end the series with one last concert in November, 2018. We're giving this mainstay of Rochester chamber music series a big farewell with six appearances throughout the month.

The last two performances from First Muse for Performance Rochester are from the final concert in November, 2018: "Nakamatsu and Amenda Meet Mozart & Dohnanyi." The gang was all on stage for Dohnanyi's first published piece, the Piano Quintet in c minor. Pianist Jon Nakamatsu, a passionate chamber musician, teamed up with the Amenda Quartet for this student composition that caught ear of many, including Johannes Brahms.

Listen to the second movement (Scherzo. Allegro) of the Quintet.

A Strong Memorial baby and Greece Arcadia grad, Julia Figueras was the Music Director and mid-day host for WXXI Classical until June 30, 2023 when she retired after more than 26 years of service. She also hosted the award-winning monthly interview/performance show, Backstage Pass.
