WXXI Classical's annual celebration of local performing groups. While the novel coronavirus has resulted in the cancellation of concerts and seasons, we brought some of the area's best live musical moments to you. This focus on local music has continued through the show Performance Upstate and the continued inclusion of live, local performances as part WXXI's daily programming.

Thu 4/18, 3:00pm Pegasus Early Music presents Couperin's Suite No. 1

Mastering one instrument is hard. Mastering a second is harder still.  Playing both in concert? Formidable. There are lots of wows when it comes to Beiliang Zhu, who is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical arts in cello and a Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology at the Eastman School of Music. Not only is she a fierce player on both the cello and the viola da gamba, but she displayed her talents on both instruments  for the March, 2018 "Bach & Bach" concert by Pegasus Early Music. We'll get to hear both of those perfomances during Performance Rochester.

Pegasus Early Music is making three appearances this month. This is the second appearance, and the first with Beiliang Zhu, although you can also hear her artistry with the Publick Musick. Here, she shines with the viola da gamba, joined by Leon Schelhase at the harpsichord and Deborah Fox with the theorbo for Couperin's Premiere Suite from his Pieces de violes.

Listen to the Courante from Couperin's Suite.

A Strong Memorial baby and Greece Arcadia grad, Julia Figueras was the Music Director and mid-day host for WXXI Classical until June 30, 2023 when she retired after more than 26 years of service. She also hosted the award-winning monthly interview/performance show, Backstage Pass.
