WXXI Classical's annual celebration of local performing groups. While the novel coronavirus has resulted in the cancellation of concerts and seasons, we brought some of the area's best live musical moments to you. This focus on local music has continued through the show Performance Upstate and the continued inclusion of live, local performances as part WXXI's daily programming.

Wed 4/24, 2:00p MostArts Festival presents The Moldau by Bedrich Smetana

The MostArts Festival debuts this year on Performance Rochester! The weeklong celebration of the arts on the beautiful campus of Alfred University encompasses many facets of the fine arts, with classes and demonstrations in glass-blowing, painting, creative writing...even flower arranging. It all begins with a gala concert, and finishes with a competition for young pianists from around the world. Maestro Yuval Zaliouk leads the MostArts Festival Orchestra, which is made up from of an international roster of musicians.

Here is Maestro Zaliuok and the MostArts Festival Orchestra from the July 9, 2017 gala opening concert with The Moldau, one of Bedrich Smetana's most beloved - and most often performed - pieces. At the time he was writing this, Smetana was struggling with blinding headaches, and would often walk along the shores of the Moldau to  find inspiration. We follow in his footsteps by this mighty Bohemian river.

Listen to The Moldau.

A Strong Memorial baby and Greece Arcadia grad, Julia Figueras was the Music Director and mid-day host for WXXI Classical until June 30, 2023 when she retired after more than 26 years of service. She also hosted the award-winning monthly interview/performance show, Backstage Pass.
