Wed 4/1, 8:00a Hochstein Alumni Orchestra performs Herold's Zampa Overture

Evan Meccarello founded the Hochstein Alumni Orchestra (HAO) in 2010, reuniting musicians who received training at the Hochstein School of Music and Dance. Since its debut, the HAO has played summer concerts in Perinton and Canandaigua, adding a winter concert in the Hochstein Performance Hall in 2011.

In addition to the HAO, Mr. Meccarello conducts the Thames Valley Youth Orchestra in New London, Connecticut, the Nazareth College Chamber Orchestra, and the Nazareth College Symphony Orchestra. He completed his Masters' degree in conducting at Bowling Green State University.

When not on stage with a baton, you can find Mr. Meccarello hosting Soundspace Tuesday afternoons on WAYO, 104.3 FM.

Fedinand Herold began his career with great promise, winning the Prix de Rome at the Paris Conservatory. His early days were spent writing orchestral music before he started creating operas. The first few operas did well, but then Herold hit an uneven patch, with varying degrees of success--with outright flops to modest successes that were swiftly forgotten. But he roared back in 1831 with "Zampa," and although the opera is rarely performed today, we all still enjoy its zippy overture.

A Strong Memorial baby and Greece Arcadia grad, Julia Figueras was the Music Director and mid-day host for WXXI Classical until June 30, 2023 when she retired after more than 26 years of service. She also hosted the award-winning monthly interview/performance show, Backstage Pass.
