WXXI Classical's annual celebration of local performing groups. While the novel coronavirus has resulted in the cancellation of concerts and seasons, we brought some of the area's best live musical moments to you. This focus on local music has continued through the show Performance Upstate and the continued inclusion of live, local performances as part WXXI's daily programming.

Fri 4/17, 9:00a Cordancia performs Estampes by Martinu

This was to be a big year for Cordancia Chamber Orchestra, as it celebrated its 10th year; part of the celebration included a performance on Backstage Pass in February. Founded in 2009 by violinist Pia Liptak and oboist Kathleen Suher, the ensemble has offered up a decade of vibrant, eclectic programs that blend the traditional with the unexpected. We'll keep the party going for Cordancia with three Performance Rochester appearances.

This second piece is from last season's Music from Eastern Europe concert at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word on March 1, 2019. Bohuslav Martinu's "Estampes" are a set of three snapshots of Switzerland, written while the composer was living there. Rachel Lauber conducts.

A Strong Memorial baby and Greece Arcadia grad, Julia Figueras was the Music Director and mid-day host for WXXI Classical until June 30, 2023 when she retired after more than 26 years of service. She also hosted the award-winning monthly interview/performance show, Backstage Pass.
