WXXI Classical's annual celebration of local performing groups. While the novel coronavirus has resulted in the cancellation of concerts and seasons, we brought some of the area's best live musical moments to you. This focus on local music has continued through the show Performance Upstate and the continued inclusion of live, local performances as part WXXI's daily programming.

Thu 4/16, 12:00p The Antara Winds play John Cheetham's Quintet for Woodwinds

Part of the Rochester Oratorio Society's Magnificat concert on November 1, 2019 was a performance by the Antara Winds. Over the years, they've also collaborated with the Perinton Concert Band, Society for Chamber Music in Rochester, and in concerts at SUNY Brockport, Roberts Wesleyan College, and elsewhere.

Founded in 1982, the Antara Winds are no strangers to our airwaves. They appear annually on Live from Hochstein, playing music of our time to the delight of the audience--both in the Hochstein Perfomance Hall and on our airwaves. Verne Reynolds and Libby Larsen have written works for them, which you can find on their CD, Antara Music

The concert featured three core players: Diane Smith, flute; Judith Ricker, oboe; and bassoonist Natalya Rose Vrbsky along with guest performers Marcy Bacon, clarinet and Jonanthan Dozois, horn. They're playing John Cheetham's Quintet for Woodwinds, which can also be found on their CD.

A Strong Memorial baby and Greece Arcadia grad, Julia Figueras was the Music Director and mid-day host for WXXI Classical until June 30, 2023 when she retired after more than 26 years of service. She also hosted the award-winning monthly interview/performance show, Backstage Pass.
