Each year WXXI Classical presents a series of films that are related to classical music in some way. Selected by our classical music hosts Brenda Tremblay, Mona Seghatoleslami, and Steve Johnson each film chosen exemplifies the power of music in a non-traditional narrative. Films are often preceded by subject-related live music in The Little Cafe or followed by live panel discussion following the film.

Join WXXI for Classical 91.5 Presents, a series that spotlights classical music connections in film.

Classical 91.5 Presents...Music of the Heart on Saturday April 8th at 2:30pm at The Little Theatre.

Musicians from Rochester's Strings for Success will play at 2:30pm, and the movie will start at 3pm.  Representatives from the Rochester Education Foundation and Strings for Success will be at the theatre with information on some ways that you can support music education in our community.

Music of the Heart tells the real-life story of violinist Roberta Guaspari (played by Meryl Streep), who co-founded Opus 118, a strings program that provides musical instruction to students in Harlem in New York City.

"The film traces Guaspari’s decades-long transformation from abandoned Navy wife to underdog violin teacher in an East Harlem public school to a passionate and unyielding advocate of city-wide music education, whose famed program is still running to this day." (Matthew Eng, Tribeca Film)

It's a surprising and under-appreciated film from director Wes Craven, much better-known for his horror films than this earnest and thoughtfully presented story about music education.
