The Percussion Scholarship group of Chicago features students grades three through twelve, that are selected for the group through a rigorous application and interview process, and are granted full scholarships. They have numerous compositions arranged especially for them by nationally known artists. The group has performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, performs twice annually at Symphony Center and has appeared at Macy's Day of Music, DePaul University, the Chicago Cultural Center, on WTTW, on WGN and WFMT radio, and as soloists with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as part of CSO Youth Concerts.
8/5 From York, PA we’ll hear outstanding young musicians soloing with the York Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Lawrence Golan. Enjoy a 17-year-old’s performance of one of Schumann’s most beautiful works for cello, a teenager that switched his focus from soccer to clarinet thanks to a life-changing concert experience, and a young violinist tackles Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with the York Symphony.
8/12 From the Midwest Young Artists Conservatory in Highwood, Illinois, we feature a line-up of all Chicago-area young musicians, including fantastic teenage piano trio playing Cassado and seven members of the Percussion Scholarship Group of Chicago.
8/19 This week includes a wonderful mix of sounds and stories, featuring an intense and delightful chamber music piece by Arno Babadjanian, along with outstanding performances on bassoon, cello, piano, and violin. Two members of From the Top’s Center for the Development of Arts Leaders are featured on the show, and we’ll share their stories of how they use music to transform their communities.
8/26 From Austin, Texas, this episode features a nuanced and emotional performance of Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in G Sharp Minor by a 14-year-old pianist from California, a teenage oboist local to Austin who is also a world champion knife thrower, and a young percussionist from Denver performing a mesmerizing piece on the marimba.
