3/30      Settling the West. Nineteenth century popular songs traced the movement west, first in canal boats and later by rail. Some people stopped along the way to settle in and down; others pushed farther. The West changed. The land of the scout and the trapper gave way to people who built towns and found what they saw as an idyllic new place beyond the far horizon at the edge of the Western sea.
