From the Top celebrates 125 years of arts training in October 2019

The October 20th broadcast celebrates the 125th Anniversary of the Walnut Hil School for the Arts, an independent boarding and day high school offering a transformational educational experience purposefully designed for student artists in grades 9–12. With training in dance; music; theater; visual art; and writing, film & media arts, every aspect of their curriculum promotes students' growth as bold artists, curious learners, and mindful citizens.

10/6      This week’s From the Top is a special program celebrating Jewish contributions to classical music featuring concert pianist Lara Downes as guest host. We’ll hear a 14-year-old share what it’s like to grow up in a Korean and Jewish household, a new piece by a Jewish-American teenage composer gets its broadcast debut, and a spectacular 18-year-old clarinetist performs a movement from Leonard Bernstein’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano.

10/13    From the Van Cliburn Competition in Dallas, Texas – From the Top goes behind-the-scenes at the 2019 Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition. Hosted by pianist Peter Dugan, this documentary style episode features six of the 23 young pianists (age 13 to 17) chosen to participle in two weeks of high-level competition and intense artistic development. This special episode reveals the personal journeys and backstories of young artists in this midst of this incredible experience, as well as some of their groundbreaking performances.

10/20    From the Top celebrates the 125th Anniversary of one of the great teaching grounds for classical musicians, the Walnut Hill School for the Arts! You might recognize guest host Lawrence Gilliard Jr. from his roles on The Wire and HBO’s The Deuce, but you may not know is also a fantastic clarinetist.

10/27    Guest Host, cellist Paul Katz, joins From the Top for this broadcast featuring outstanding musicians from all over the world participating in the 23rd annual Morningside Music Bridge program held at New England Conservatory.
