You may know beatboxer Kevin Olusula from the Grammy winning a cappella vocal ensemble Pentatonix. This month you'll hear him co-host a special program commemorating Juneteenth, June 20th. We'll also meet 15-year-old Ebun Oguntola, a composer from Feyetteville, NY who studies at Eastman Community Music School.

6/20      Grammy Award-winning artist Kevin Olusola joins Host/Pianist Peter Dugan and young Black musicians from across the country for a special Juneteenth-themed episode. Black teenage classical musicians including an impressive 15-year-old composer Ebun Oguntola share stories and performances, reflect on Juneteenth, what it means to them, and the world around them. The music of Florence Price, Samuel Coleridge Taylor, African American Spiritual, and a young Black composer are highlighted.

The formidable composer featured in this episode, Ebunoluwa Oguntola, is a curious and enterprising young artist. During her segment, she discusses her Nigerian background and culture, connecting deeply with co-host Kevin Olusola, who is also of Nigerian descent.  She takes a moment to discuss her deep love of space and the ever-expansive mysteries that come along with space exploration. Her composition, “The Dimensions,” discussed in detail during the interview, is brought to life by violinists Charles Yang and Doori Na, and pianist Peter Dugan. 

Ebun is a composer, conductor, violinist, and pianist from Syracuse, New York. A sophomore at Jamesville-DeWitt High School, she studies with Natalie Draper of the Setnor School of Music at Syracuse University and Paul Coleman at the Eastman Community Music School. Ebun is a violinist in the Symphoria Young Artist Orchestra, and has composed music for Symphoria and its youth orchestras. Ebun participated in the Luna Composition Lab at the Kaufman Music Center. She has performed and composed for the Society of Music.
