The Plaza de Ruperto Chapi is a beautifully landscaped square in the city of Alicante, Spain located along the side facade of the Principal Theater of Alicante. It is dedicated to the Villena-born composer Ruperto Chapí, with a limestone monument carved in 1930 by the Vicente Bañuls.  We'll hear his music on Monday 9/6 at 11pm.

9/6 (11p) The Spanish Massenet: Ruperto Chapí Ruperto Chapí is best known for his 150 zarzuelas. But he also composed in every genre. This week, The Spanish Hour offers a selection of Chapí’s music for the theater and the concert hall.

9/13      Mexican and Spanish Rarities This week The Spanish Hour presents a program of hidden gems from Mexico’s Miguel Bernal and Spain’s Isaac Albéniz.

9/20      Giants of Mexican Musical Nationalism This week on The Spanish Hour, orchestral works by two giants of Mexican musical nationalism: Manuel Mara Ponce’s Piano Concerto and Carlos Chávez’s Third Symphony.

9/27      Profile: Carlos Suriñach Works by naturalized U.S. citizen Carlos Suriñach, highlighting the Barcelona-born German-trained composer’s melodic re-imaginings of Spanish folkloric traditions. Included are the flamenco-inspired Ritmo jondo, the Piano Quartet of 1944 and his Piano Concerto, dedicated to Alicia de Larrocha.
