Austrian composer Franz Schubert would have been friends with many other composers had he not died at such a young age (31).  Bill McGlaughin explores the music of composers who might have been his friends, performed by some of the biggest artists of our time. Week of Sep 27 at 7pm.

Week of September 6, 2021 - Dona Nobis Pacem - Grant Us Peace  Recently, Bill was staying at a beautiful little home up in the Oak Forest in Massachusetts, near the Connecticut River. There had been tremendous thunderstorms through the night, but when he awoke, on that Sunday morning, the sun was shining and the birds were singing. This inspired Bill to present a whole week of music about peace. We hope that you find some peace in our selections including works by Bach, Byrd, Grieg, and Schubert, plus we will hear Ella Fitzgerald sing one of her favorite songs, “Angel Eyes”.

Week of September 13, 2021 - Gustav Mahler – Part 1 An Austrian composer who thought, “A symphony should be like the world: it must embrace everything.” With his ten-plus symphonies, Mahler’s world extended horizons beyond anything known to concert audiences. His vision stretched the boundaries of the orchestra, of the symphonic form and even this radio show! Join us for two full weeks on the symphonies of Gustav Mahler.

Week of September 20, 2021 - Gustav Mahler – Part 2  We continue with the life and works of Gustav Mahler. This week features Kindertotenlieder sung by Kathleen Ferrier; Symphony of a Thousand; and tenor Fritz Wunderlich singing the Drinking Song of the Earth’s Sorrow from Das Lied von der Erde. This is to name just a few highlights- you don’t want to miss this week!

Week of September 27, 2021 - Franz Schubert and the Friends He Never Got to Meet, Part II Surely a great many of us have been moved by the deep music of the Austrian composer Franz Schubert, who created a massive catalog of works despite living only a tragically short 31 years. Bill got to thinking about all the composers who would have been friends with Schubert, but were born just a few years too late. In this set of shows we continue our explorations of works from composers who should have been friends with Schubert, this time hearing Chopin, Schumann, and Liszt. We offer you Arthur Rubinstein alone, Charles Rosin and Richard Goode accompanied by orchestras, plus Yo-Yo Ma, Evgeny Kissin, the Juilliard Quartet with Leonard Bernstein (at the piano!), Dawn Upshaw, George Szell, Emanuel Ax, and even Van Cliburn.
