Founded in 1842 by a group of local musicians led by American-born Ureli Corelli Hill, the New York Philharmonic is by far the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States, and one of the oldest in the world. The New York Philharmonic, a longtime media pioneer, began radio broadcasts in 1922, and is currently represented by The New York Philharmonic This Week — syndicated nationally 52 weeks per year?.

Although noted Russian teacher, conductor and composer Anatoly Liadov never attained the success of Stravinsky, several of his orchestral works continue to be performed, including his most famous, The Enchanted Lake, a tone poem which had its premiere in 1909. We'll hear it Oct 30th at 3pm.

The idea of the Péri comes from Persian mythology, where they are exquisite, winged beings known for their beauty. Dukas referred to La Péri as a ‘poème dansé’, which is a curious distinction for a work that was intended to be a ballet from the beginning. Dukas was a firm believer in the interdisciplinary function of poetry, music and drama or dance.
