Earlier this summer, NPR Music put out a list that they called “an intervention, a remedy, a correction of the historical record and hopefully the start of a new conversation” -The 150 Greatest Albums Made by Women.
Anne Midgettewrote in the Washington Post, "NPR’s recent list of the 150 greatest albums by women was inspiring — but where were the composers? In the wake of much discussion about the chronic underrepresentation of female composers on American concert programs, I came up with my own best-of list.”
You may know several of these women and their works from listening to WXXI Classical 91.5 - including Jennifer Higdon, Amy Beach, Florence Price, and KaijaSaariaho (whose L'Amour de Loin was only the second opera by a women to be staged in the Metropolitan Opera's history).
According to Midgette, “ My selections are based on a combination of personal preference and some idea of what constitutes “importance,” and it was hard to winnow it down to only 35.” The conversation continues, with lots of great music to discover and explore. Read the full article here.
