Former Rochester resident and long-time Eastman professor Christopher Rouse died unexpectedly on Saturday.
His wife Natasha Rouse made the announcement on his facebook page:
"I am greatly saddened to announce the death of my husband and friend, Christopher Chapman Rouse III, on September 21st at 11:27 a.m. He passed away unexpectedly due to sudden complications from his eight year battle with renal cancer.
Chris has left me with instructions regarding his passing and will I will follow them respectfully. He has asked that no religious memorial be held. Our friend retained his dry sense of humor, patience and sweetness to the end.
I hope that it is a comfort to his colleagues and students to know that he passed peacefully and in my arms.
I thank all of you for your condolences and support in the past hours."

His music was praised for its bold lyricism, craftsmanship, and imagination. Among other honors, Rouse won a Pulitzer Prize and three Grammy awards. His music was was performed by every major U.S. orchestra and more abroad. Read more here.
