At WXXI Classical, we have made an intentional decision to add compositions and performances to our music library that represent a wide spectrum of voices, heritages and identities; bringing you, our listeners, the best classical music from years ago, right up to compositions and performers of today. We also look for opportunities to bring audiences together to celebrate classical music, and work with other like-minded groups around the region who are investing in the future of classical music for all.

One such organization that we've partnered with for years is the Gateways Music Festival, an organization that connects and supports professional classical musicians of African descent and enlightens and inspires communities through the power of performance. Gateways is also proactive in inspiring the next generation of classical musicians of African descent.

Under the guidance of GMF’s Director of Programs Armand Hall, RPO Assistant Conductor Jerrhard Hardeman, and teaching artists Joshua Henderson, Alexandria Hill, Jennifer Arnold, Angelique Montes, and Anthony Morris, Gateways' Young Musicians Institute (YMI), offers a full-day immersive experience for young string players in Rochester. Students engage in a dynamic and creative day of music-making with this distinguished team of educators and musicians.

This month, October 14-18, Gateways is celebrating its FALL FESTIVAL of diverse concerts, screenings and youth instruction, unfolding at Eastman School of Music! Spotlight performances will feature violinist Josh Henderson and pianist Joshua Mhoon with pay-what-you-choose admission.

FREE events (RSVP required) include a film screening and discussion of "The Harlem Hellfighters," showcases by the Young Musicians Institute, and composer Jordyn Davis's workshop of a definition-expanding new composition for orchestra.

Ticketed events include a Piano Recital by Joshua Mhoon and Gateways Showcase Concert with Josh Henderson and Friends.

The Gateways Brass Collective concludes the Fall Festival with a ticketed celebratory concert in Kilbourn Hall.

Full Festival Passes are also available!

We hope to see you at this week of music-making, honoring the past, present and future of Black classical artistry!
