WXXI Classical's annual celebration of local performing groups. While the novel coronavirus has resulted in the cancellation of concerts and seasons, we brought some of the area's best live musical moments to you. This focus on local music has continued through the show Performance Upstate and the continued inclusion of live, local performances as part WXXI's daily programming.

Wed 4/17, 9:00am Geneva Music Festival presents Faure's Piano Quartet in c minor

The Geneva Music Festival is making its debut on Performance Rochester, but it isn't the first time on our airwaves; the GMF has made two previous appearances on Backstage Pass. In 2011, violinist Geoffrey Herd brought together a group of friends to "entertain, inspire, and nurture a lifelong appreciation of classical music throughout the community" of Geneva, his hometown, and surrounding towns. Needless to say, Geoffrey has brilliant friends, and they have been packing houses from the start.

This is the second of two appearances; both were drawn from "A Transfigured Night," the second concert of the 2018 season. Violinist Jinjoo Cho, violist Eric Wong, and cellist Max Geissler were joined by pianist Hyun Soo Kim to play  the Piano Quartet No. 1 by Gabriel Faure, a piece written when Faure was energetically wooing Pauline Viardot's daughter, Marianne. While the relationship ultimately crumbled, the piece lives on, at times heartfelt, but also with moments of great joy and humor.

Listen to the second movement (Scherzo, Allegro vivo) of the Faure.

A Strong Memorial baby and Greece Arcadia grad, Julia Figueras was the Music Director and mid-day host for WXXI Classical until June 30, 2023 when she retired after more than 26 years of service. She also hosted the award-winning monthly interview/performance show, Backstage Pass.
