WXXI Classical's annual celebration of local performing groups. While the novel coronavirus has resulted in the cancellation of concerts and seasons, we brought some of the area's best live musical moments to you. This focus on local music has continued through the show Performance Upstate and the continued inclusion of live, local performances as part WXXI's daily programming.

Thu 4/2, 12:00p Society for Chamber Music in Rochester performs Paul Wiancko's Toy Bricks

In each season of the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester, you'll find a concert called "Baroque and Blue," where more traditional fare shares the program with music on the jazzier side of the spectrum. SCMR co-artistic director Juliana Athayde is not only the Concertmaster for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, but she's also an accomplished jazz violinist, so these programs give her, along with her fellow musicians, a chance to really stretch and swing. In April, 2019, Juliana teamed up with cellists Lars Kirvan and Benjamin Krug and double bassst Jeff Campbell, himself a fine jazz player, to perform Paul Wiancko's delightful frolic, "Toy Bricks."

A Strong Memorial baby and Greece Arcadia grad, Julia Figueras was the Music Director and mid-day host for WXXI Classical until June 30, 2023 when she retired after more than 26 years of service. She also hosted the award-winning monthly interview/performance show, Backstage Pass.
