In 2011, violinist Geoffrey Herd brought together a group of friends to "entertain, inspire, and nurture a lifelong appreciation of classical music throughout the community" of Geneva, his hometown, and surrounding towns, and the Geneva Music Festival was born. As it turns out, Geoffrey has brilliant friends, and they have been packing houses from the start.
In this first of two Performance Rochester appearances this year, Geoffrey and friends take on Brahms' second sextet. It is a work of almost symphonic heft, with a lovely musical reference in the first movement to Agathe von Siebold (he spells out her name), a young lady with whom Brahms was enamored. Alas, the relationship never blossomed, as was the case with most all of Brahms' infatuations, but the beauty of this dynamic work lives on. Joining Geoffrey are violinist Jinjoo Cho, violists Abigail Rojansky and Eric Wong, and cellists Max Geissler and Jonathan Dormand in this performance at the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts on June 1, 2019.
