WXXI Classical's annual celebration of local performing groups. While the novel coronavirus has resulted in the cancellation of concerts and seasons, we brought some of the area's best live musical moments to you. This focus on local music has continued through the show Performance Upstate and the continued inclusion of live, local performances as part WXXI's daily programming.

Thu 4/9, 7:05a Canandaigua LakeMusic Festival plays the Presto from Handel's Concerto Grosso, op 6

The Canandaigua LakeMusic Festival was founded in 2004, with the mission to bring innovative programs to the Canandaigua area in a casual setting--perfect for summer in the Finger Lakes. Their educational shows for kids in the Wood Library are always packed, and the signature Classical Blue Jeans concert, pairing barbecue and an interactive program that ranges from fiddling to more standard fare, is always sold out. Artistic Directors Amy Barston and Kevin Kumar create a season that beckons to new listeners while continuing to delight their long-time attendees.  2020 will bring a name change to ChamberFest Canandaigua, but the stellar performances will remain the same.

Here's a short and sweet presto from Handel's Concerto Grosso No. 5, op 6, recorded in the Finger Lakes Community College Concert Hall on July 28, 2019. Violinist Kumar is joined by J Freivogel, Maia Jasper White, and Robert Anemone; Meredith Crawford and Sam Quintal play viola; cellist Barston is joined by Rachel Freivogel, and Andrew Appel plays the harpsichord.

A Strong Memorial baby and Greece Arcadia grad, Julia Figueras was the Music Director and mid-day host for WXXI Classical until June 30, 2023 when she retired after more than 26 years of service. She also hosted the award-winning monthly interview/performance show, Backstage Pass.
