The first hall for the Gewandhaus Orchestra owes its name to the place where it first performed in 1781 above the cloth store of the clothmakers’ guild the historic Neumarkt. Exactly 200 years later, in October 1981, the New Gewandhaus was inaugurated on Augustusplatz after a construction period of four years.
