Fiesta July Highlights

7/2: Guitar, Piano and Orchestral Music from Colombia
We’ll hear a selection of Colombian music by composer and guitar virtuoso Gentil Montaña
and by living composers Amparo Ángel, one of the most prominent women composers on the continent, and by 102-year-old composer Luis Carlos Figueroa.

7/9: Baroque Music from the New World
The music written and performed in Latin America during the Colonial period (16th to early 19th centuries) has become more popular in recent years. However, even before those treasures were rediscovered, several composers from the region showed their interest in exploring the strong connections between Spanish and European music from the past and Latin American music. We’ll hear Baroque music written in Boliva and 20th century music from Spain and Latin America inspired by this music

We are having a ball trying to keep up with our ever-expanding musical collection as composers and performers around the world joyously overwhelm us with their creations. Consistently amazed by their level of talent and artistry, we are thrilled this week to share their music with our listeners.

7/23: Peruvian composer Celso Garrido-Lecca
Elbio shares music of 20th century Peruvian composer Celso Garrido-Lecca Elbio shares. After studying in Peru and Chile, Celso was awarded a scholarship to study with Aaron Copland at Tanglewood. We will hear about his fascinating life as well as his music including this double string quartet and bass work Antaras.

7/30: Brazil: Baroque to Classical
During its colonial times, Brazil was a very wealthy area of the Portuguese empire. As
such, it supported a very intense musical activity. Fiesta presents music composed in
Brazil during the 18th and 19th centuries by composers such as Luis Alvares Pinto,
José Mauricio Nunes García and Sigismund von Neukomm.
