Officials are investigating an incident where a swastika was discovered at the Eastman School of Music.
The Nazi symbol was found early Sunday morning, with the faintly written swastika on a piece of paper in one of the elevators.
A letter from Eastman Music School Dean Jamal Rossi to the Eastman community says however lightly the swastika was written, its intention is clear, and that is to publicly disrespect the Jewish religion, members of its community and anyone who values tolerance.
He says this incident is being taken seriously and is a violation of university policy and the university’s Department of Public Safety is investigating.
Rossi says that incidents like this are rare and not reflective of the Eastman community, but everyone is always encouraged to report any bias-related activities.
The swastika was discovered a day after the mass shooting that killed 11 people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh.
UR president Richard Feldman says that the university is not isolated from instances of intolerance and disrespect and he says that they need to stand unified against prejudice and hate.
