He spoke by phone from Cincinnati (shortly before an appearance in a concert performance of Verdi’s opera “Otello”) on a range of subjects including singers' longevity, what he loves about Upstate New York, and how a taking a major mid-career risk has catapulted him to the most prestigious opera stages in the world.
