The WXXI Education team is halfway through this summer’s Exploration Station Series at the Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County, NY.  We have explored this year’s theme, “Libraries Rock!” by providing music learning activities at our free, family-focused events.

This summer’s first Exploration Station Day was focused on The Song of Six Birds, a children’s book by Rene Deetlefs.  This story features a girl who is inspired by bird calls and makes music with her flute.  Grace Frarey, a junior at the Eastman School of Music, visited the library to demonstrate the flute for children.  They even got a chance to play the flute themselves!

Peyton Johnson, also an ESM student, demonstrated how to play the trumpet at another one of our Exploration Station Days.  Including Eastman students has been a great way to share their music playing and teaching skills with the community.  We will have more Eastman students visiting the library at our next three Exploration Stations this summer.  Join us there to meet them and try out an instrument for yourself!

There are three more Exploration Station Days happening this summer.  This Thursday, August 2nd, we will explore the children’s book Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin by Lloyd Moss.  On Thursday, August 9th, we will be reading Barn Dance by Bill Martin, and on Thursday, August 16th, the book we are exploring is called My Family Plays Music by Judy Cox.

These events are scheduled for Thursdays from 11-3 at the Children’s Center of Central Library – 115 South Avenue, Rochester, NY 14604.  There is parking available at the Court Street Garage.  All events are free to the public, and remember to bring your library card!  Hope to see you there!

Alexandra Deitrich is an intern with the WXXI Education Department this summer.  She is a junior music education major at the Eastman School of Music, and her instrument is piano.  Alexandra enjoys working with her school’s chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) to provide music learning experiences for the local community.
