This spiritual, haunting Vespers program is an a cappella setting of texts taken from the Russian Orthodox All-Night Vigil ceremony, perfectly suited to the Easter season.
Performed in Russia by the Moscow State Chorus and soloists, and hosted by Valerie Kahler, Rachmaninov's setting uses multiple styles of traditional chant, while demonstrating the complex use of harmony, textural variety and polyphony so well-known in Russian choral music.
