During Black History Month we celebrate the artistry of pianist Awadagin Pratt and Jessie Montgomery, who are both Black. The turbulent summer of 2020 forced the classical music industry to take a hard look at its own spotty history of inclusion. “Things have changed,” Pratt said. “It will be interesting to see if it’s sustained and what shapes it takes.”

Erwin Schulhoff (1894 to 1942) came from a Jewish, upper-class, music-loving milieu. From 1924 Schulhoff lived with his wife Alice and son Petr in Prague, paying homage to the Viennese School of the Atonal, and traveling restlessly in Europe as an avant-garde pianist and improviser.

Composer and conductor Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson passed away in 2004 after having served since 1998 as the Artistic Director of Performance Programs at the Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College in Chicago.

Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu has written over 90 film scores, a lot of concert music, and a lot of classical music. We'll hear two of his works for chamber orchestra on Jan 18th at 8pm.
