CANCELLED: March 18: Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra
12:10-12:50pm in person at The Hochstein School and broadcast live on the radio.
Musicians from the 86-member Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra, directed by Casey Springstead, perform a special concert for Live from Hochstein. A full orchestra for advanced strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion students in grades 7–12, the HYSO presents three concerts per year along with periodic international tours.

The program includes Open the Door, a short orchestral overture by American composer Gwyneth Walker, written in 1990 for The Women's Orchestra; Felix Mendelssohn’s stormy Hebrides Overture, also known as “Fingal’s Cave,” inspired by a trip to Scotland; George Enescu’s exciting Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 in A major; and a suite of John Williams’ music for the 1972 western The Cowboys, which starred John Wayne in one of his last roles.

CANCELLED: March 25: Ekstasis Duo
12:10-12:50pm in person at The Hochstein School and broadcast live on the radio.
Featuring the Ekstasis Duo – Natasha Farny, cello, and Eliran Avni, piano.

As the nation celebrates the centennial of a woman’s right to vote, Ekstasis celebrates women’s creativity with a program called “Women’s Voices: Fierce women composers from the 19th and 20th Centuries.” The concert includes works by Louise Farrenc, Clara Schumann, and Ethel Smyth, and song transcriptions of Nina Simone.

The American cellist and Israeli pianist first met as students at Juilliard. As a duo, they celebrate masterpieces alongside the secret jewels of lesser-known works.

CANCELLED: April 1: Sibley Chamber Players
12:10-12:50pm in person at The Hochstein School and broadcast live on the radio.

Featuring Shannon Nance, violin; Marc Anderson, viola; Kathleen Murphy Kemp, cello; and Doleen Hood, piano, performing works by Dohnányi, Schumann, and Saint-Saëns in celebration of Hochstein’s 100th anniversary.

The program entitled “Celebrating an Era – Chamber Music from the 19th and 20th century” includes Ernst Dohnányi’s Serenade for String Trio, Robert Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat major, and Camille Saint-Saëns’ Élégie for Violin and Piano.

The works on this program were composed between 1842-1920 and represent an era when many beautiful chamber music pieces were created. The program selections were written before, during and after David Hochstein’s lifetime – and one was composed the year the Hochstein School was established.

The Sibley Chamber Players brings together musicians from Eastman, Hochstein, and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra to collaborate on chamber music projects and to perform throughout the community. The ensemble is named in honor of Emily Sibley Watson and the Sibley family for their role in supporting fine art and music in Rochester and in celebration of the connections that exist today between the institutions they helped to establish and support.

CANCELED: April 29: Settling the Score: A Celebration of Female Composers
12:10-12:50pm in person at The Hochstein School and broadcast live on the radio.

This concert celebrates the music of female composers from the 18th through 21st Centuries in an eclectic program featuring works by Sofia Gubaidulina, Valerie Coleman, Princess Amalie of Prussia, and Amanda Harberg.

The Semplice Duo was formed in 2000 with the goal of introducing audiences to the less frequently performed chamber music for flute and piano.

Hochstein alumna Cristina Ballatori has performed across the United States, Europe, England, and Latin America as a recitalist, soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. She now teaches at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Named Teacher of the Year by the Alabama Music Teachers Association, pianist Kevin T. Chance has performed throughout the United States and abroad as both soloist and collaborator.

CANCELED: May 6: String Fantasies: Early 20th-Century Duos for Violin and Cello
Wednesday, 12:10-12:50pm in person at The Hochstein School and broadcast live on the radio.

Violinist Soo Yeon Kim and cellist and Hochstein faculty member Cora Swenson Lee perform early 20th-century duos for violin and cello, including music by Glière, Ravel, and Kodály.

The violin and cello may seem like a natural pair, but there is surprisingly little concert music written specifically for the two instruments as a duo. Reinhold Glière was one of the first composers to experiment with this beautiful combination, in his charming Eight Pieces in the late romantic style. Zoltán Kodály and Maurice Ravel each wrote a sonata for violin and cello, both of which are now staples of the repertoire. These two works are full of life, showing off not only the virtuosity of the performers but also a full spectrum of colors, timbres, and textures.

Cora Swenson Lee has performed in venues across the United States and internationally. Her early music ensemble, Trio Speranza, concertizes each season, and in 2014 won the Presentation Prize at Early Music America’s Baroque Performance Competition. Korean-born violinist Soo Yeon Kim is a dynamic performer and educator. She has appeared in the U.S. and internationally both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. She is Assistant Professor of Violin and Viola at Houghton College.

CANCELED: May 13: Gossamer Edge Trio: Garden of Delights
Wednesday, 12:10-12:50pm in person at The Hochstein School and broadcast live on the radio.

Featuring Gossamer Edge Trio: Allyn Van Dusen, mezzo-soprano; Rita George Simmons, flute; and Paula Rodney Bobb, piano, performing music set to poetry by famed Indian Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore.

The program also includes works by Franz Schubert, Gabriel Fauré, and Cary Ratcliff, among others. Rita George Simmons and Paula Bobb are both members of Hochstein’s faculty, in flute and piano, respectively. Mezzo-soprano Allyn Van Dusen is a versatile performer who has appeared as a soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, RPO, and Rochester Oratorio Society, among others.

The voice-flute-piano trio Gossamer Edge was formed in 2012 to explore the vibrant repertory for this trio combination, as well as solo literature and duos combining the instruments in different ways. These sonic possibilities make for intriguing and varied programs in which the performers point to meaningful interconnections, soul journeys, and playful perspectives on life, expressed through the sheer beauty of the music and poetic texts.

Mona Seghatoleslami is the Music Director, host and producer on WXXI Classical 91.5 FM weekdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. She also hosts the lunchtime concert series Live From Hochstein Wednesdays at 12:10 p.m., interviews musicians, produces special programs, and works on any project she can find that helps connect people and music in our community through WXXI.
